Time Charging for Training
What you need to know
As a Sandia employee, it’s important to track your work hours, including time spent completing training.
How It Works
Be sure to review the HR Solutions Training Charging article, which provides guidance on how to correctly charge time for training activities.
For the purposes of time charging, there are two main types of training:
- Centralized/Enterprise Training: Refers to corporate-wide mandatory and leadership development programs, including required courses and enterprise-level training initiatives, managed and funded centrally by HR to ensure consistent skill development across the organization.
- Decentralized Training: Includes organizational job- or role-specific training managed by directorates/divisions. Costs for organizational training and discretionary employee skills training are charged to division indirect overhead funds, and Direct/LDRD project training costs are charged to the related direct or LDRD funded project.
Project/task numbers for training vary from division to division. To obtain a project/task to charge your time in training, refer to guidance provided by your division business administrator (DBA) or center business administrator (CBA).
Time Reporting Codes (TRCs):
- Employees should use TRN to report time spent attending formal training (both exempt and non-exempt) in the timesheet tool.
- Non-exempt employees should use TRV in the timesheet tool to report training-related travel time.
- For corporate training that requires specific TRCs (290 or 295), employees must continue to use the designated corporate training TRC.
