Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Sandia provides an employee assistance program (EAP) that employees and interns can access through Employee Health & Wellbeing Services on-site medical clinics in New Mexico and California.
The clinics are staffed by licensed behavioral health clinicians, so support for emotional well-being is only a call or a few steps away.
Comparable external EAP services are available for employees and their eligible dependents covered under Sandia medical plans.
How the On-Site EAP Can Help

- Grief and loss
- Managing frustration and anger
- Interpersonal conflicts and communication
- Dealing with change at work and in personal relationships
- Substance and alcohol issues
- Anxiety and depression
- Parenting and caregiving demands
- Legal and financial pressures

How the On-Site EAP Works

- On-site appointments are in person or virtual with an EAP clinician to assess your concerns, provide short-term support, or refer you to resources within Sandia or in the community.
Resources for Leaders +
Confidential Consultation for Managers
EAP clinicians are available to support managers with issues related to employee behavior and performance concerns. Support includes role-playing difficult conversations and how to refer distressed employees to EAP services.
Supervisors can make a formal referral to the EAP to support an employee with workplace behavior and performance problems. At the written consent of the employee, the EAP reports compliance with EAP attendance.
Organizational Support
Grief Groups and Team Announcements
EAP clinicians are available in person or virtually when a team experiences a loss within their work group or organization. EAP clinicians provide manager consultation and educate employees about common reactions to grief and recommendations for self-care.
Critical Incident Response
Should a traumatic event occur in the workplace, EAP clinicians are experienced in providing psychological first aid, diffusing announcements, leadership consultation, in-person or virtual groups, education related to common trauma reactions and self-care, 1:1 sessions with employees, and relevant referrals.
Subject Matter Expertise
Teams, boards and committees throughout the Labs and Nuclear Security Enterprise can call on the EAP to speak in support of employee psychological well-being, behavioral health, and organizational culture.
Informational Program Orientations
The EAP can speak at monthly L1 Leadership Training, ERG events, onboarding events, and organization meetings on a variety of subjects such as burnout, boundaries, holiday coping and transitions.
EAP Scheduling and Consultation
Call 505-284-1562 (New Mexico) or 925-294-2200 (California) to speak with the EAP or schedule an on-site or virtual care appointment. All calls are treated confidentially.
About Confidentiality and Clearance
EAP participation and records are confidential. Mandated exceptions to privacy include threat of harm to self or others, and suspected abuse or neglect of a child or incapacitated adult.
As stated in the Questionnaire for National Security Positions, the U.S. government recognizes the critical importance of behavioral health and advocates proactive management in support of personal wellness and recovery. Receiving counseling for a behavioral health-related matter will not jeopardize your clearance. In fact, seeking care most often contributes favorably to decisions about clearance eligibility.
